[BUDDHIST in Court. Problem of Oath Overcome. Ichigora Yosheda, a Japanese Buddhist, provided a problem for Mr. Harrison, S.M., at the Glebe Summons Court yesterday. Given the Bible with which to be sworn he kissed it. Mr. Harrison then pointed out to Mr. Twigg (for Yosheda) that the procedure was not in order. Yosheda said he did not know how he should be sworn, never having been in Court before. He promised, however, to tell the Whole truth, and was permitted to give evidence. Mr. Harrison was later informed that the correct method of administering the oath to a Buddhist was: "The witness must hold a copy of the book, "The Life of Buddha" in his hand, and repeat" 'I declare in the presence of Buddha that I am an unprejudiced witness, and if what I shall speak shall prove to be false, or if by colouring truth others shall be led astray, then may the three Holy Existences, Buddha, Damma, and Pro Sangha, In whose sight I now stand, together with the devotees of the 22 firmaments, punish me and also my migrating soul.' DISPUTE over QUILT. Yosheda, a laundry man, was sued by Mrs Alice Scutts for detention of a quilt which she had left with him for cleaning. Yosheda said that the quilt was handed to a boy who said he wanted Mrs. Scutts's quilt, and paid 1/6 when it was delivered to him.
