[Tue 10 Sep 1889, Sheffield Independent, South Yorkshire. The Suicide at the Workhouse At the Fir Vale Workhouse, yesterday, Mr. Wightman held an inquest on the body of William Twibell, 60 years of age, scale and spring maker, an inmate of the Workhouse during the last three years, and who committed suicide there on Friday by cutting his throat with a razor. During the last few months the deceased had been in the Workhouse Hospital suffering from heart disease, and complained that he could get no rest night or day. On Friday afternoon he left his bed, and was soon afterwards found in the closet with his throat out. A razor stained with blood was found near him. Medical assistance was procured, but he died several hours afterwards. Before his death he told Sarah Ann Scutt, one of the nurses, that he was in such severe pain he took his razor, which was under his pillow, and determined to put an end to his life. Accordingly he went into the closet and cut his throat. Upon the question being raised by a juror, it was stated that the nurse did not know the deceased had a razor in his possession, and the Coroner pointed out that the deceased was not considered insane, and, therefore, it would be thought unnecessary to search for dangerous articles. A verdict of "Committed suicide while temporarily insane" was returned.] [Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald - Saturday 14 January 1893 Blean. Guardian and Sanitary Authority - There were present on Thursday Messrs. Brice (Chairman), Greaves, Swinford, Farley, Pidduck, Jones, Spantoe, and the Clerk (Mr. Barch). The Town Clerk of Canterbury wrote that the contract with Chartham Asylum for accommodation of female lunatics expired at the end the month. The Council could not find an asylum nearer than Salisbury and asked the Guardians combine making arrangements with them and the Bridge Authority. The Clerk said the point was who was to bear the expense? Mr. Jones thought the Borough. Mr. Farley said the difficulty only began when female patients were removed to Salisbury. The matter was left over for the Clerk to confer with the other Union Representatives. Applications were received for the appointment of nurse, and Mrs. Baker, 10 Victoria Terrace Bay, and Miss Scutt, Easington, Yorkshire, were selected to appear before the Board at the next meeting, when the appointment will be made.]
