Wilson, of Coberley Mill.] [Taunton Courier, and Western Advertiser, Somerset - Saturday 17 October 1959. 'Lucky to Get Off With Fine', Driver in Trouble over Licence. Shepton Mallet motorist who failed to produce his driving licence after being convicted for a speeding offence was fined £5 at Somerton on Monday and was told by the Chairman Major General R. Evans, 'You have failed to comply with the order of the Court, despite frequent, applications. Now you come here and waste time with a trivial and cantankerous argument which, as far as I can see has no bearing on the case. In the circumstances I think you are rather lucky to escape with this fine'. Defendant was Arthur Herbert Scutts, Waterloo Road, Shepton Mallet, who said the original summons was made out in the name of Scotts, and returned this, pointed out the error, and expected another to be issued in the correct name. He had not been officially notified of the case having been dealt with. 'As far as I am concerned' said defendant, 'the original summons has never been heard, so I have never been given the chance of defending myself'. No Doubt questioned by the Magistrates Clerk, Mr. C. J. Arrow, defendant said he had no doubt that, the summons had been intended for him and he had returned it with plea of guilty and a request that the magistrates should deal with it in his absence. Mr. Arrow said the summons had been amended by the Court before the case was heard. The Court was told that several unsuccessful efforts had been made to obtain defendant's licence, and defendant had replied that he was not taking a newspaper report as his only official notification of the conviction. Mr. Arrow said a notice of fine had been sent to defendant on the day of the Court, but defendant denied receiving this.] [A H S - 66yr., Ness Strange, Ditcheat, Shepton Mallet, Somerset - Tyre and Oil Distributor 8th August 1966 - Barham & Watson, IA Princess Street, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, Solicitors (Dorothy Scutts).]
