Charles Cecil Scutt 1908-1986

A suggestion that his client had been "tricked" out of a controlled letting into a furnished one was made by Mr. A. Mason Amery in a case which came before the Cheltenham and District Rent Tribunal yesterday. The case was one in which Miss M. O'Farrell, occupying accommodation at Gambles House, Gambles Lane, Woodmancote, had her rent reduced from £2 10s. to £2 per week with security of tenure for three months. Mr. Amery's submission was that Miss O'Farrell, who formerly occupied an adjacent cottage belonging to the lessor, Mr. C. C. Scutt, was then a protected tenant under the Rent Restrictions Acts. She was asked by Mr. Scutt to move into Gambles House, which she did, on the promise of 12 months security. Mr. Scutt, who moved into the cottage after her, sold it and vacated on June 28. Statemant Denied. Mr. W. J. H. Davies (T. A. Matthews and Co., Hereford), representing Mr. Scutt, submitted that a notice to quit had been served on Miss O'Farrell on April 5, expiring on May 2, but this was denied by Miss O'Farrell. A subsequent notice, added Mr. Davies, was accepted by the lessee. The Tribunal agreed, fixed the rent at £2. 5s. a week, and granted three months security, terminating on September 7. The Tribunal congratulated Miss I. N. M. Westmacott, the lessor of Greendale, The Green, Northleach, on raising the standard of accommodation provided in respect of Mrs. D. Gessey, the lessee, and approved the referred rental of £2. 5s. per week. The Tribunal comprised Mr. G. Blagg (chairman), Mr. J. J. Edmonds (deputy chairman), and Mr. W. H. Parker, with the Clerk.]
