Henry Scutt 1852-1938

Notas [reg:1852 Sep 26 - father:gamekeeper.] [Worcester Journal Sat 23 May 1891. Stealing Pheasant's Eggs Henry Scutt charged Edwin Merrick with taking from land at Upper Sapey pheasant's eggs on the 26th ult. Scutt stated that he was keeper to Sir Francis Winnington. He saw defendant and a boy near a coppice. They appeared to be searching for something. The boy said something to defendant, who came over the fence and put something in his pocket. Witness accused him of stealing eggs, and defendant thereupon gave him up 11 pheasant's eggs. Mr. Benbew, who appeared for defendant, cross-examined the witness for some time, and contended that his client found the eggs in ovation, and was on his way to the keeper's honse when he met him and gave the eggs up to him. John Hayes, a boy, and that he went with defendant to see where the cattle had got out. They found a pheasant's nest containing 11 eggs. Defendant said, "Let's take them up to the keeper, and he will give as a shilling for them. Fined 6d. and 9s. costs.] [H S - 86yr.]
