Benjamin Drury, 46, agricultural labourer, was indicted for maliciously setting fire to a stack of wheat, the property of Jonathan Scutt, at Ousefleet, on the 20th September last. He admitted that he committed the crime, but said he was at the time suffering from delirium. Mr. Wheelbouse, who prosecuted, stated that Ousefleet was near Goole, at the extreme corner of the West Riding, and that the prosecutor was a farmer (since dead), and the prisoner was his son-in-law. On the morning of the day mentioned he went deliberately into Mr. Scutt's stackyard and set fire to the stack. Prisoner expressed deep sorrow for what he had done, maintaining that if he had been in his right mind at the time he should not have committed the crime. 74 (John Scutt ca 1823-1910)
[1881 Morris Featherstone from Spaldington was farming Elm Tree (as the tenant of Mr Thomas Jackson) and was living there with his wife Emily and their young family. Sadly Mrs Feathersone died aged 29 in 1884 and by the following year the 154 acre farm was occupied by John Scutt. John Scutt was in 1885 almost 60 and was originally from Whitgift. He was married to Susannah who was ten years younger than him [born West Butterwick] and they had five daughters [Jane, Sarah Ann, Minnie, Florence and Lilian] and one son, Jonathan, who was then aged about 20. The family had moved several times before they came to Eastrington - the older children were born at Staddlethorpe and the younger ones at Adlingfleet, while by 1881 they were living on a farm of 120 acres at Amcotts. For a time Florence Ada Scutt, daughter of John and Susannah, was school monitor. Her brother Jonathan, the only son, married Eliza Jane Holey on June 16th 1890, which was 'Feast Monday'. Two years later the couple moved to farm at Duncotes which stood opposite Gate farm at Balkholme. They had a large family of eight sons and five daughters but not all of them survived to adulthood. In January 1901 John William 'Willie' Scutt, their 10 year old son, died of scarlet fever and in January 1923 Norman Scutt, aged 12, their youngest son, died of croup. In 1908 Mr and Mrs Jonathan Scutt moved to take over Elm Tree farm from Mr Scutt's father and they remained there until about 1937 when they moved to a smaller house ('The Nook' on the corner of Pinfold Street). Their youngest surviving son Arthur Calvert Septimus took over at Elm Tree. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1940 and Mrs Scutt then recalled how at one time she made and sold a hundred pounds of butter a week which was sold at 8d a pound.] [Sheffield Daily Telegraph Thu 04 Jul 1901. The Property Market. At Goole, yesterday, Mr. T. Beevers, of Castleford, sold by auction a dwelling-house to Mrs. Scutt, of Eastrington, for £225.] [Hull Daily Mail, East Riding of Yorkshire, Thursday 01 February 1900. Bowden. Petty Sessions. 76 (Sarah Ann Scutt ca 1860-)
[Tue 10 Sep 1889, Sheffield Independent, South Yorkshire. The Suicide at the Workhouse At the Fir Vale Workhouse, yesterday, Mr. Wightman held an inquest on the body of William Twibell, 60 years of age, scale and spring maker, an inmate of the Workhouse during the last three years, and who committed suicide there on Friday by cutting his throat with a razor. During the last few months the deceased had been in the Workhouse Hospital suffering from heart disease, and complained that he could get no rest night or day. On Friday afternoon he left his bed, and was soon afterwards found in the closet with his throat out. A razor stained with blood was found near him. Medical assistance was procured, but he died several hours afterwards. Before his death he told Sarah Ann Scutt, one of the nurses, that he was in such severe pain he took his razor, which was under his pillow, and determined to put an end to his life. Accordingly he went into the closet and cut his throat. Upon the question being raised by a juror, it was stated that the nurse did not know the deceased had a razor in his possession, and the Coroner pointed out that the deceased was not considered insane, and, therefore, it would be thought unnecessary to search for dangerous articles. A verdict of "Committed suicide while temporarily insane" was returned.] [Whitstable Times and Herne Bay Herald - Saturday 14 January 1893 Blean. Guardian and Sanitary Authority - There were present on Thursday Messrs. Brice (Chairman), Greaves, Swinford, Farley, Pidduck, Jones, Spantoe, and the Clerk (Mr. Barch). The Town Clerk of Canterbury wrote that the contract with Chartham Asylum for accommodation of female lunatics expired at the end the month. The Council could not find an asylum nearer than Salisbury and asked the Guardians combine making arrangements with them and the Bridge Authority. The Clerk said the point was who was to bear the expense? Mr. Jones thought the Borough. Mr. Farley said the difficulty only began when female patients were removed to Salisbury. The matter was left over for the Clerk to confer with the other Union Representatives. Applications were received for the appointment of nurse, and Mrs. Baker, 10 Victoria Terrace Bay, and Miss Scutt, Easington, Yorkshire, were selected to appear before the Board at the next meeting, when the appointment will be made.]
