[Hull Daily Mail, East Riding of Yorkshire, Thursday 11 June 1891. Goole Petty Sessions. Wednesday. Before Mr R. Crevice (chairman), Hon. A. F. Hood, and Dr Blair. Important to Farmers: Employer's and Workmen's Act. Enoch Cousins and Win. labourers, were summoned by Wm. Scutt, farmer, Swinefleet, under the Employers and Workmen's Act for breach of contract in leaving their work four days after they had entered his service. W. Everatt appeared for the complainant, and Mr Everatt Hind for defendants. A legal discussion took place whether actual contract been entered into. Mr Hind argued at some length from the law as laid down in the Statute of Frauds, and ultimately the Bench read another case which bore out Mr Hind's contention, and dismissed the summons with the remark that it was a matter of great concern for the farmers. The law was clear, and the Beach suggested that the farmers should get the men to sign a note which would then constitute an agreement for hiring. This not having been done, they dismissed the case, and refused defendants their costs.] [Sheffield Daily Telegraph Fri 17 Oct 1902. Doncaster County Court.
