[Birth Certificate, father:W S - farm labour, reg:1884 Dec 13. R S bapt:(1)1884 Nov 25 privately & (2)1889 Aug 11. W S - farm labour, reg:1884 Dec 13.] [Sussex Agricultural Express, Saturday 10 October 1908. Alleged Assault. Charlotte Scutt, a girl of 14, was charged with assaulting James Leadbetter at Storrington, 20th September. Defendant pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor said that at 7.20 in the morning of the 20th he was going to work and when passing the backdoor where defendant lived next door to witness, she squirted water over him with a syringe and when he returned home to dinner at 12.20 she did the same thing again. The wife of prosecutor corroborated. William Scutt, father of the defendant, said that his daughter did not go out of the house as she had got a bad foot. The case was dismissed. Rose Scutt, sister of last defendant, pleaded not guilty to assaulting Alice Amelia Leadbetter, wife of last complainant. Prosecutrix said that on the 22nd September defendant threw stone at her striking her between the shoulders, hurting her very much. Before General R T Godman (in the chair), Mr. W A Hounsom, Mr. W Powell-Breach, Mr. R B Dell, Mr. B Y Bevan, Mr. F W Sim, Colonel E A.Young, and Colonel O J Cavenagh. Damaging Underwood, the property of Leonard A Curtis, farmer, of Storrington, on February 16th. White, carter, in the employ of prosecutor, said he saw defendant go into the wood. He followed her and afterwards took possession of the wood. Prosecutor said there had been lot of damage done during the winter, and he was determined to put a stop to it; he valued the wood at 5s. Defendant refused to plead or say anything on her own behalf. Her father said she only took a little wood for the fire. Defendant was bound over in the sum of £5 to be of good behaviour for six months. Her father, who was cautioned by the Bench, was also bound over.] [R C also lived at Lobscombe Corner in Salisbury until her brother Harry Scott moved to Weymouth in 1943.] [R C 78yr.]
