25 July 1871:Inquest on James Scutt, who died from a severe injury sustained when he was thrown from a waggon he was driving through Heyshott. James Scutt,who was "34 years of age last March" was a groom in the employ of Mr John Neale of Bignor and was taking twelve geese from Cocking Causeway in his waggon on 10th July when the accident happened. He died from "concussion of the brain" five days later on Saturday 15 July, without regaining consciousness. Evidence was given by his father Charles Scutt, who had worked for Mr Neale of Bignor for 19 years.
