Notes Sussex Advertiser - Tuesday 05 September 1865. STEYNING PETTY SESSIONS. Monday, September 4. Present The Rev. John Goring, Captain Barttelot, and G. C. Carew Gibson, Esq. ASSAULT. Isaac Harding was charged with assaulting George Scutt, Edburton, on the 24th ult. Complainant, a boy only 10 years old, deposed I was at Paytham Farm, Beeding, on Thursday week, the 24th August, at work, when defendant flogged me with a line. I was a carter-boy to mind the plough. Defendant was ploughing. He flogged me because I was late of a morning. I should have been there at half-past six, but did not arrive till eight o'clock. P.C. Holmes sworn On Saturday, the 26th August, he examined the complainant. His hips and shoulders were a mass of bruises, black and blue. He had the appearance of having been flogged with a line. Complainant was re-called, and stated that his father sent word to defendant to flog him if he did not get to work in time. Fined 1s., and 13s. costs, which paid.
