Two more vehicular fatalities yesterday, an elderly pedestrian run over by a tram at Glandore and a cyclist in a collision with a car at Port Piriemake, a total of nine road accident deaths in the State in a week. Thomas Polkinghorne, 74, of Wellington Street, Glandore, received fatal injuries when he was knocked down by a Glenelg-bound tram near the Black Forest crossing yesterday afternoon. The driver of the tram saw him approaching the crossing for pedestrians, and sounded a warning. Polkinghorne, whose sight was defective, apparently became confused, ran forward, and was struck by the side of the tram. He received a fracture of the skull and concussion, and was treated by Dr. K C Scutt, of Glandore. Detective R L Leane, who was travelling in another tram car, alighted at the scene of the accident, and took Polkinghorne to the Adelaide Hospital in a civil ambulance. He died soon after admission. Plainclothes Constable E J Davis is preparing a report for the city coroner (Mr. Blackburn).] [The Mail (Adelaide, SA :1912-1954) Saturday 3 February 1945 p3 Article. Bay Tram Kills Woman. A middle-aged woman was knocked down and killed by a Glenelg tram at Glandore West this afternoon. She was Mrs. Minna Thelma K O'Bryen, about 50 of Narkunda Street, Glandore. Mrs O'Bryen had been visiting friends and left to catch a tram to the city. As she was crossing the down track at the corner of Beckman Street she was struck by a Glenelg-bound tram and died almost immediately. Dr. K C Scutt pronounced live extinct and a civil ambulance removed the body to the City Morgue.
