William H. SCUTT - Census 1871 scholar, Census 1881 Able Seaman 21yrs. (born Littlehampton) H.M.S. MINOTAUR (at sea). The "Minotaur" was a five masted iron-clad warship (400 feet long, 10,500 tons with a crew of 800). In 1881 the Minotaur was sailing from Vigo, Spain to Portsmouth. Apparently, she was normally based in Gibraltar. Also on board was Vice Admiral Arthur Hood (1824-1901) one of the famous seafaring Hoods (source:David Simkin). Later on, he served as a crew member on various ships including S.S.Toronto (Ellerman's Wilson Line, Ltd, Hull) 1918 Dec 20 to USA, and lived at 34 Crowle Street, Hull, Yorkshire. 5ft.6in., 168lbs. Another port of departure was Newcastle.
