Francis Charles Lawrence, a labouring man, was charged with stealing a jar containing preserved plums, value 1s, the property of John Charles Scutt. P.C.114A said "shortly after 8 o'clock the previous evening saw the prisoner in Ashley Road carrying something under his coat." Witness stopped him and found it to be a pot jam which he stated he picked up in Cheltenham Road. Alexander Cross, assistant Mr Scutt, grocer, Cheltenham Road, saw the jar jam had been taken from outside the shop where it had been placed with some goods. The accused pleaded not guilty, and said he found the jar wrapped in paper in Cheltenham Road. The bench were not disposed to credit the man's story, and sent him to prison for 21 days with hard labour.] [Bristol Mercury - Sat 01 Sep 1900 Licensing Notices.
