Sussex Agricultural Express - Saturday 12 August 1893. Sussex Summer Assizes. Continued from Page (Before Mr. Justice Mathew), Thursday. “infamous conduct.” - John Gates, 33, labourer, was indicted for taking Alice Kate Daughtrey out of the possession of Albert Daughtrey her father, for an unlawful purpose, at Washington on the 16th of April 1803. second indictment charged the prisoner with carnally knowing the girl, she being then under 16 years of age. Mr. Marshall Hall conducted the prosecution. The facts, as stated in evidence, were that the prisoner look the girl - who was his sister-in-law - away from her home on the 10th of April, to Storrington where she slept with him at the Cricketers Arras. The next day they went to Littlehampton and slept together at some public house, and afterwards on to Chichester. The girl denied that prisoner asked her her age or that she begged and prayed of him to away with her. Prisoner in statement said that she frequently asked the prosecutrix home with him but she refused. He referred to her alleged drunken habits and bad character generally. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and the judge passed sentence of six months hard labour, his Lordship remarking that his conduct was infamous.
