Notes
[Surrey Mirror, Saturday 25 October 1884. Sudden Death of a Child. An inquest held on Thursday last, before Mr. Percy Morrison, Coroner, upon the body of Clara Scutt, aged 2-1/2 years, daughter of a police constable living in Nutley Lane, who died suddenly on Monday morning. From the evidence of Mary Ann Scutt, mother of the infant, it appeared that the child was very sickly, and had recently had the whooping-cough. She had been away for three weeks with a younger baby (Sarah May Scutt), who had had the measles. She returned on Saturday last, and the child then complained of being tired. She thought probably the measles were approaching, and wrapped her up for the purpose of bringing them out. On Sunday night she got worse rapidly, and although Mr. Lloyd was sent for at once the child died before he arrived. Mr. Lloyd now stated that he had made a postmortem examination of the body. The child was healthy, but the brain was very large, and the membranes were much inflamed. Death was due to inflammation of the membranes. The jury returned a verdict of death from natural causes.] [S M S - 18yr.]
