[Sussex Advertiser, Tuesday 16 October 1866. Steyning Petty Sessions. Monday, Oct 15. Present Capt. Crofts (in the chair), Sir Charles Goring, Bart., H.P. Wyatt, and G.C. Carew-Gibson, Esqrs. Poaching. Henry Grover was charged with poaching at Botolphs, on 6th Oct. last. Edwin Scutt sworn "I am a constable in the West Sussex Constabulary, stationed at Shoreham. On Saturday, the 6th Oct. inst.. at half-past 6 in morning, I was at Lancing and going to Steyning. I saw rabbit in a wire set close to the edge of road in Botolphs parish, the occupation of Mr. Stapley, who occupies land on each side. I saw defendant come across from Mr. Trower's furze, and he had two wires in his hand. I was about 30 yards from him. He came across into the road from the adjoining land, to where the rabbit was. He produced the three wires. He (defendant) took the rabbit up, and put it into his basket. He then took the three wires and put them under some grass. I was concealed in the furze at the time. He said in answer to my enquiry, that he had to leave to set the wires there". Fined 8s., and 12s. costs, or days hard labour.] [E S - 32yr.]
