[Census 1861-71 Dorset.] [Western Gazette, Somerset, Friday 25 February 1870. Farmers Club. A meeting of the members of this club took place at the Crown Hotel, on Saturday, under the presidency of Mr John Scutt, when the subject of Education was brought forward for consideration by Mr John Mitchell, of Dean's Leaze Farm, Wimborne. Between 20 and 30 gentlemen were present. Mr Scutt, in opening the proceedings, stated that at their first meeting this year, when the accounts were passed, he was very glad to say that they had good balance in hand ("hear, hear"). There was one painful subject to which he could not but allude. Since their last meeting, the club had sustained a great loss by the death of Mr Rawlings, was sure all present would join with him in the expression of deep sympathy with his widow and family (hear). Mr Rawlings was universally respected and beloved. Mr Mitchell's paper was listened to attentively. The voluntary system, with all its faults, was preferred by the lecturer, whose remarks were borne out by discussion.] [J Scutt - 67yr.] |

[Salisbury & Winchester Journal, Wiltshire, Monday 22 October 1832. Dorset Michaelmas Sessions. In commenting on the various cases which would be brought before the jury, the Chairman mentioned a very curious one that of a gentleman named Gray of Sherborne who, having detected a boy throwing stones at his walnut-tree, caught him, tied him down, and drew one of his teeth by way of punishment. On Wednesday another court was opened, over which D. O. P, Okeden, Esq., presided.] [3 months: John Kent, for stealing a snuff-box, Stalbridge; Thos.
