William H. SCUTT - Census 1871 scholar, Census 1881 Able Seaman 21yrs. (born Littlehampton) H.M.S. MINOTAUR (at sea). The "Minotaur" was a five masted iron-clad warship (400 feet long, 10,500 tons with a crew of 800). In 1881 the Minotaur was sailing from Vigo, Spain to Portsmouth. Apparently, she was normally based in Gibraltar. Also on board was Vice Admiral Arthur Hood (1824-1901) one of the famous seafaring Hoods (source:David Simkin). Later on, he served as a crew member on various ships including S.S.Toronto (Ellerman's Wilson Line, Ltd, Hull) 1918 Dec 20 to USA, and lived at 34 Crowle Street, Hull, Yorkshire. 5ft.6in., 168lbs.
