William Anscomb - Birth:?17 MAR 1813 Spear Hill, Ashington, West Sussexx. Note: age inconsistent with Ontario census. Believe 1813 correct. Christening:7 May 1815 Ashington, West Sussex - Death: 15 Jun 1902 Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, CANADA. Note:OVS Death 17654, Co. Poor House - Burial: Langton Baptist Cemetery, N.Walsingham Twp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, CANADA. Occupation:mason 1851-61, Lay Methodist Minister by 1871. Religion: Methodist. Cause of death: old age. William Anscomb sired an illegitimate child, Lois: bapt 16 Mar 1834, Thakeham, West Sussex by a widow Hannah Scutt. For this he was committed to Horsham gaol 5 Nov 1833 by J.Gibson 'for having gotten a child on the body of Hannah Scutt likely to be born a bastard and not indemnifying the parish of Thakeham". (his age 21) He was tried on 30 Dec 1833, and committed to gaol until security was found. This was not a moral issue, rather Thakeham did not want a fatherless child on the poor law. He was tried again on a misdemeanour 7 Apr 1834, and discharged by proclamation. Suspicion he may also have sired Lizzie Anscomb, b:circa 1859, marr: 1880, by niece Eliza. See OVS marriages 00724, Co. Norfolk, Div. Simcoe, all evidence indicates he was part of 1835 Petworth emigration. |
