He had been shooting on the plains beyond Boots Cray all day. Using a double barrel fowling piece and before returning in the afternoon, with one of the barrels loaded he discharged it in the air to prevent accidents. The barrel immediately exploded about 8in from the nipple and completed shattered Scudds left hand blowing several of the fingers away, and exploding the wrist bone for several inches.
